After getting my new sewing machine, the hubster took me shopping for a few sewing necessities to get me started. It’s really interesting to shop for a hobby you’re excited to start when you don’t know anything about it. There we stood, looking at all these doodads and I realized that I was diving into more than a hobby. Sewing is its own little world.
One of the things we bought on that first trip was a rotary cutter and cutting mat set by Fiskars. Having no idea what I was doing, I got the smallest mat they had since my intention was to start with small rice pillows… Yeah, it doesn’t work out that way. You need a bigger mat to cut larger pieces of fabric on. I get that now. Anyway, I made due with this tiny mat and my only rotary cutter as long as I could, then I got a larger mat.
Much better, right? Yeah, no. My brand new rotary cutter was dull within 2 weeks. I didn’t use it nearly enough in such a short time to justify the blade dulling. It wasn’t like it was just leaving bits of fabric attached here and there, either. No, I found myself hacking away and having to go back and cut in multiple places all down the fabric. I tried different amounts of pressure, but really didn’t feel that I should have to put my full weight into it either.
I was disappointed, and aggravated, to say the least. Without much knowledge of the craft, I also didn’t know what brands to trust. Was this normal for Fiskars? Should I get replacement blades or should I go with another brand cutter? I ended up ordering another cutter that came with pinking blades as well as normal blades, but I was still bugged. Fiskars has a customer service form, so I took advantage of it and explained what had happened. My email was forwarded to their warranty department. Within days of contact with the warranty department I had 2 packs of blades in my mailbox to replace and compensate for my dull one. I haven’t had a chance to try them out yet, but I’m looking forward to it and will decide which cutter I like the best. In the end, though, Fiskars has made me happy and impressed me with their great customer support.
